Easter Weekend in Nanaimo – Semester Abroad Canada

Easter Weekend in Nanaimo

Report by Sabrina H.

As I spent my semester in Nanaimo in the spring semester, I also got the chance to spend the Easter weekend in Canada. Generally, I experienced Eastern in Canada to be very similar to Eastern in Germany. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, on Easter Sunday the kids usually go on Easter egg hunt and everyone spends time with their families.

Celebrating Easter in Canada

Easter Dinner_Sabrina Haible A friend from one of my courses at VIU invited quite a few people over to her house to spend the Saturday together. In total, we were probably around 12 to 15 people having a great dinner and playing fun games together.

As my friend has a 3 year old daughter all of us hid chocolate eggs and other treats later in the evening. We even put flour everywhere in the apartment and formed bunny spoors. Additionally, her daughter had to leave a plate with carrots and a note for the Easter Bunny. One of us bit the carrots so it looked like the Easter Bunny had eaten parts of the carrot. We had a lot of fun doing this and it was a great night with amazing people.

Waterfront in Spring

Eastern Sea Lion_Sabrina Haible_klein Due to the fact that another German international student and myself did not have family to visit during the Easter weekend our friend invited us over again on Easter Sunday and we got to enjoy a delicious and elaborate turkey dinner. After the incredible dinner, we all went for a walk at the Waterfront in Nanaimo. It was a really nice evening and we had an amazing meeting with a sea lion just by the dock in the harbor. The sea lion came really close and seemed to enjoy people taking photos of him. All of the Canadians said that such a close meeting with a sea lion with that size was a very rare event. Usually you would only see them further away. This was a perfect ending for the Easter Sunday and a very fun and exciting weekend in general.

All in all, my other German friend and I were really lucky that we found such a good and close friend who shared all these amazing moments with us over this weekend and I think this will always be one of the first things we will remember when we think back to our time in Canada.
